Information on the BMW Digital Charging Service
What is the BMW Digital Charging Service?
The BMW Digital Charging Service is a new and intelligent service for anticipatory, convenient, cost-effective and green electricity optimised charging of electrified vehicles. It is available for all BMW i and BMW i Performance vehicles. BMW Digital Charging Service is depending on your vehicle included in the special equipment package 'ConnectedDrive Services' or 'Connected eDrive Services' as a basic service of the “ConnectedDrive Services” for 3 years, (renewable thereafter). The service can be purchased via the BMW ConnectedDrive Store for a yearly fee of £45.
What are the abilities of the BMW Digital Charging Service?
With the BMW Digital Charging Service, you can charge your vehicle automatically, comfortably and suitably to your charging preferences. If you have a flexible electricity tariff, you can charge your vehicle at low cost times or, together with the BMW i Wallbox Connect, environmentally friendly using your own generated solar power, where available. Additionally, you receive an overview on your charging history and the savings, generated by using the BMW Digital Charging Service. The BMW Digital Charging Service evaluates the most favourable periods for charging the vehicle based on the customer’s individual electricity tariff. Thus, the system automatically uses periods with low electricity prices and at the same time makes sure the vehicle has been fully charged for the defined departure time. The resulting charging time window is automatically transferred into the vehicle and will be executed without further interaction needed. If the pre-conditioning of the vehicle interior prior to departure is activated by the customer, it is taken into account by the service.
Where do I use the BMW Digital Charging Service?
The energy demand of the vehicle, as well as the expected charging costs are visible in the BMW Charging Portal. This is based on the stored electricity tariff and the calculated charging progress. Information regarding the concluded charging processes of your registered vehicles, including energy charged (kWh) and charging time, can also be found in the BMW Charging Portal. The BMW Digital Charging Service is utilised via the linked BMW ConnectedDrive Portal and BMW Charging Portal, or the BMW ConnectedDrive smartphone app (BMW Connected).
What is the BMW Digital Charging Service capable of in combination with a BMW i Wallbox Connect?
The BMW Digital Charging Service can be used without a Wallbox. Hereby the BMW Digital Charging Service analyses your electricity tariff with regard to cheap time periods and switches the charging window accordingly. For a more detailed optimisation of your charging process, a BMW i Wallbox Connect is needed. By using a BMW i Wallbox Connect, an even more detailed charging plan can be calculated. This is particularly beneficial for variable energy tariffs. The integration of a local photovoltaic system into the calculation of the charging plan by the BMW Digital Charging Service and into the charging process for the use of own electricity is only possible with a BMW i Wallbox Connect. Here, the calculation of the charging plan and the generated savings depend on the predicted or actual* electricity generation of the photovoltaic system. *For actual PV generation measurement additional metering devices are also needed, (availability: tbc).
According to which criteria will the charging plan be calculated?
The charging plan is based on the energy demand of the vehicle, the chosen departure time, the electricity price and, if available, the production forecast of your photovoltaic system. By setting the charging preference via the BMW Charging Portal (“Maximum use of self-generated solar energy” or “Cheapest option”), the charging plan will adjust with focus on the solar prognosis or the electricity price. If a compatible electricity meter is installed, the electrical house load limit will be considered in the calculation of the charging plan. If the time between plugging the vehicle in and the set departure time is sufficient, the vehicle will be fully charged. Also, if activated, the pre-conditioning of the vehicle interior will be considered.
How does the charging plan differ by charging with or without a BMW i Wallbox Connect?
Principally, when the BMW Digital Charging Service is activated, an intelligent charging plan is calculated, based on time zones with cheaper electricity prices and a resulting charging time window is set automatically. If a BMW i Wallbox Connect is installed, a more detailed charging plan is calculated and executed, taking flexible electricity prices and – if available – the local solar power generation into consideration. The intelligent charging plan can include an optimal and flexible consideration of varying electricity prices, as well as a prognosis of solar energy based on the weather forecast and estimated output of the local PV system. If a BMW i Wallbox Connect is installed, the vehicle can be charged faster than using a standard electrical outlet. Furthermore, the BMW i Wallbox Connect enables safe/secure charging activities by using the included RFID cards to unlock your BMW i Wallbox Connect.
Can I also use the features and benefits of the BMW Digital Charging Service in combination with another charging station?
Yes. Intelligent charging is in general also possible with other charging stations or even a standard electrical outlet. Although, the 'extended' functionalities, e.g. measurement of the real power supply of the solar system, can only be used with the BMW i Wallbox Connect.
Does the BMW Digital Charging Service also work with vehicles of other manufacturers?
Currently vehicles of other manufacturers cannot be connected to the BMW Digital Charging Service.
Can I use the charging history for invoicing the electricity towards my employer?
If you use a BMW i Wallbox Connect, the charging history is generated from the measured values of the built-in electricity meter. This data may be used for invoicing. However please note regulatory requirements, e.g. regarding questions relating to tax law. If you are not using a BMW i Wallbox Connect, the charging history is calculated from the status information of the vehicle which is not as accurate as the metered consumption of the BMW i Wallbox Connect.
Will my vehicle always be fully charged with the BMW Digital Charging Service?
The most important criterion for the calculation of the charging time window or charging plan is to fully charge the battery of your vehicle by the departure time. If the time between plugging-in the vehicle and the determined departure time is too short, the vehicle is charged with maximum power in order to achieve as much electrical range as possible. For example, if you only have one hour of charging time available, the vehicle is charged with maximum power. Hence, the battery possibly might not be charged completely, dependent on the current state of charge.
Can the BMW Digital Charging Service be used with a local electricity storage?
A power storage device in the house offers additional possibilities to use self-generated electricity for charging processes, if energy is available in the storage at the charging time. However the BMW Digital Charging Service solar charging optimisation is primarily based on a prognosis of the solar generation to be used ‘directly’ for charging. Currently the BMW Digital Charging Service functionality is not yet compatible with storage systems that are not coupled with your household network on the AC side. These are either systems that feed their energy on the DC level of the solar system or ones with so-called hybrid-inverters. Please clarify whether your system is among those mentioned with your electrician during the on-site survey.
What are the recommended electricity meters needed for?
The basic functions and benefits of the BMW Digital Charging Service without a BMW i Wallbox Connect do not require an additional power meter. In connection with a BMW i Wallbox Connect additional meters extend the range of functions: A household meter enables the monitoring of the overall power consumption to prevent from overloads and reduce the charging power in case of too high consumption/peak loads. Additionally, the charge planning can be optimally adjusted by learning the typical consumption pattern of your household. A meter connected to the photovoltaic system is a prerequisite for solar-optimised charging, since the BMW Digital Charging Service can thereby learn the energy generation behaviour of your photovoltaic system. Meter availability: tbc
What is the solar share?
The solar share is the fraction of the self-generated solar power which is used for charging.
Energy tariff
Do I need a special electricity tariff for the BMW Digital Charging Service?
In general, every electricity tariff is suitable for the BMW Digital Charging Service. In order to achieve cost savings, you need at least an electricity tariff with peak/off-peak price times or a flexible energy tariff with dynamic price structures. In combination with your own photovoltaic system and a BMW i Wallbox Connect, you can also benefit by preferably using your own generated solar power for the charging process.
Where can I get a suitable electricity tariff with saving potential for using tariff-optimised charging?
We recommend that you contact your energy provider to discover if they offer an electricity tariff with favourable times, or a flexible energy tariff with dynamic price structures. Alternatively you may wish to switch to another provider with a suitable tariff.
Do I need a second electricity tariff for my vehicle?
No, in general a household has one electricity tariff and total consumption is centrally measured by one utility meter.
Utilisation requirements
For which vehicles is the BMW Digital Charging Service available?
The BMW Digital Charging Service is available for all BMW i and BMW iPerformance vehicles.
What do I need to use the BMW Digital Charging Service?
To use the BMW Digital Charging Service you need a BMW i or BMW iPerformance vehicle with “ConnectedDrive Services” including Digital Charging Service and at least one home charging location. Mobile phone reception (GSM connectivity) must also be ensured at the location where the vehicle is parked and charged so that communication between the vehicle and the corresponding BMW systems is possible.
Do I need a BMW i Wallbox?
The BMW Digital Charging Service can be used without a Wallbox. A BMW i Wallbox Connect is recommended for a more precise optimisation of the charging plan and for a more precise integration of a photovoltaic system. Additionally, if you would like to use the charging history for invoicing purposes, the charging history is generated from the measured values of the built-in electricity meter..
I would like to preferably use my self-generated solar power for charging – what do I need for this?
To use the BMW Digital Charging Service for optimised charging with calculated values for self-generated electricity in connection with a photovoltaic system, the photovoltaic system needs to be registered in the BMW Charging Portal https://charging.bmwgroup.com/web/360electric-uk. If available, the photovoltaic feed-in tariff can also be added in the BMW Charging Portal for inclusion in cost efficient charge planning. As soon as you have setup the BMW Digital Charging Service including the photovoltaic system, the system is ready to estimate your daily solar outcome. To charge preferably with locally generated solar power, the charging preference 'Maximum use of self-generated energy' needs to be activated in the BMW Charging Portal. To enhance your estimated solar share for the charging process the use of a BMW i Wallbox Connect in combination with the BMW Digital Charging Service is recommended. By integration of additional meters the estimated solar share can be validated by measured values. For integration of the meters the following requirements have to be met: The photovoltaic system and compatible energy meter/s have to be installed. In addition, the BMW i Wallbox Connect has to be connected to your home network via LAN or WLAN and have access to the internet. After that the photovoltaic system has to be set up in the BMW Charging Portal and, if applicable, the feed-in tariff has to be added.
I have (or purchased) the BMW Digital Charging Service and would like to use optimised charging – what do I need for this?
For this you need to create and activate a BMW ConnectedDrive account in the BMW ConnectedDrive Portal https://www.bwm-connecteddrive.uk. Then you simply set up the service with your individual information (charging location, energy tariff etc.) in the BMW Charging Portal https://charging.bmwgroup.com/web/360electric-uk and you can start charging intelligently. Mobile phone connectivity at the location where the vehicle is parked and charged needs to be ensured, so that communication between the vehicle and the respective BMW systems is possible. The transmission of the GPS coordinates of the vehicle to BMW needs to be activated (GPS Tracking setting in the vehicle), otherwise the charging location cannot be recognised and an optimisation of the charging process cannot be executed.
What needs to be considered for optimised charging?
For the correct operation of the BMW Digital Charging Service, the vehicle needs to be charged at the charging locations defined within the BMW Charging Portal https://charging.bmwgroup.com/web/360electric-uk and in the country in which the contract was concluded. At defined locations without a BMW i Wallbox Connect the charging mode "Off-peak charging” has to be chosen in the vehicle via iDrive or via the BMW Connected App "Intelligent without Wallbox Connect" (IOS) / "Tariff time slot" (Android). At defined locations with a paired BMW i Wallbox Connect the charging mode "Intelligent charging” has to be chosen in the vehicle via iDrive or via the BMW Connected App "Intelligent with Wallbox Connect" (IOS) / "Smart charging" (Android). For charging at different locations, e.g. at a public charging station, a switch of the charging mode to "Immediate charging" is necessary, otherwise it is possible that the charging process will start with a delay. The charging mode is set via the iDrive controller in the vehicle, the BMW Connected app or in the BMW ConnectedDrive Portal.

How can I integrate a photovoltaic system?
For the integration of a photovoltaic system a BMW i Wallbox Connect is required. The photovoltaic system needs to be set up in the BMW Charging Portal together with any applicable feed-in remuneration. The accuracy of the entries (location, basic data of the PV system) has an effect on the forecast quality. Furthermore, a compatible meter has to be installed and the internet connectivity to the BMW i Wallbox Connect ensured. Additionally, "Maximum use of self-generated electricity" needs to be chosen as charging preference in the BMW Charging Portal: https://charging.bmwgroup.com/web/360electric-uk.
How does the charging current restriction have to be set in the vehicle?
Note for BMW i3: A separate setting of the charging current restriction for a standard charging cable and Wallbox is available. If you are using a dedicated Home Charger/Wallbox, set the value to "maximum". If you are charging your vehicle with the standard charging cable at a regular 3-pin power outlet, we recommend setting the value to "reduced or minimum". The exact setting depends on your electric installation at the charging location. For further information, please consult the manual of your BMW vehicle.
How many vehicles can I manage with one BMW i Wallbox Connect?
A maximum of three vehicles can be assigned to one BMW i Wallbox Connect. Thereby, each vehicle is identified for charging via a separate identification chip ("RFID-Token"). The BMW Digital Charging Service uses this identification to control the charging processes and create the charging history.
Can I also integrate other local energy generators (e.g. wind turbine) into the system?
Currently only electricity from a local photovoltaic system can be taken into account by BMW Digital Charging Service and integrated into the intelligent charging process.
How do I find out what the performance of my house connection is?
There are several ways of finding out the performance of your house connection: You can find out in your fuse/meter box, which current in ampere (A) is printed on the automatic main circuit breakers, typical values are e.g. 35A, 50A, 63A, 75A, 90A, 100A. The performance can then be calculated with the formula: current value x voltage x number of phases / 1000, so e.g. 100A x 230V x 1/1000 = 23 kW. If you are using an electricity contract that limits the obtained power regardless of the performance of the installed connection, enter the value that you find as the limit in the tariff conditions of your contract. Additionally, your house electrician may also be able to provide you with information regarding your connection.
No vehicle is shown in my BMW ConnectedDrive account. Can I still use the BMW Digital Charging Service?
The BMW Digital Charging Service can only be fully installed and used if your BMW i or BMW iPerformance vehicle is allocated to your BMW ConnectedDrive account. It is only possible to use the BMW Digital Charging Service if the GPS coordinates are transmitted. The position data is only used by BMW in accordance with the terms and conditions and data protection guidelines.
What is the difference between charging plan and charging time window?
In case of a charging time window, a calculated time slot based on your electricity tariff is transmitted to the vehicle and the vehicle automatically starts the charging process at the scheduled/calculated time. This is possible without a BMW i Wallbox Connect. A charging plan is only available in connection with a BMW i Wallbox Connect and permits a more detailed control of the charging process (controlled charging interruptions and adjustment of the charging power level), which for example, allows a customisation of the charging process to the solar prognosis. In both cases the charging window/plan is shown in the BMW Charging Portal https://charging.bmwgroup.com/web/360electric-uk, in the form of a bar chart.
When should I choose the charging mode "Intelligent charging"?
The charging mode "Intelligent charging" is only available if you are using and have configured a BMW i Wallbox Connect. "Intelligent charging" has to be selected within the vehicle via BMW iDrive (depending on vehicle model), via the BMW ConnectedDrive Portal, or in the BMW Connected app for optimised charging at the BMW Digital Charging Service charging location, and at the appropriately configured BMW i Wallbox Connect. When charging at other pre-defined BMW Digital Charging Service charging locations without a BMW i Wallbox Connect, "Tariff optimised" or "Immediate" charging mode should be selected as required.
Can I use the service at several locations?
Yes, the locations need to be entered in the BMW Charging Portal https://charging.bmwgroup.com/web/360electric-uk as BMW Digital Charging Service home charging locations and the relevant prerequisites must be met. Optimised charging with BMW Digital Charging Service is therefore only possible at home charging locations. The service needs to be purchased/activated in all vehicles you wish to use the service with.
Can visitors charge at my place and take advantage of the BMW Digital Charging Service?
An optimisation of a foreign vehicle via the BMW Digital Charging Service is not possible. Visitors can of course charge their vehicles at your location non-optimised. When charging foreign vehicles, please note that an authorisation may be necessary at the home charger/BMW i Wallbox Plus/Connect.
Which charging mode setting should I use?
If you are not using a BMW i Wallbox Connect: Set the charging mode of your vehicle to "Off-peak charging" (may be displayed as "Tariff optimised charging" in some vehicles/devices). This setting can be selected via the BMW Connected app, BMW iDrive in the vehicle (model-specific) or in the BMW ConnectedDrive Portal. Consequently, the BMW Digital Charging Service automatically sets the charging time window within the period "Tariff start" and "Tariff end", based on the entered electricity tariff and independently performs the charging process. The charging mode "Intelligent charging" cannot be selected without a BMW i Wallbox Connect and should only be used when charging at that location. If you are charging at public charging stations, you have to switch the charging mode to "Immediate charging". If you wish to set a tariff window manually, you can disable the setting of a tariff window by the BMW Digital Charging Service in the BMW Charging Portal. Important note: If you set the charging mode “Off-peak charging" ("Tariff optimised charging") for the first time you have to reset the factory settings for the charging time window from ”00:00 to 00:00“ which means “Immediate charging”, to any other time like e.g. “12:00 to 12:00”. When you are using a BMW i Wallbox Connect: The charging mode "Intelligent charging" is available in connection with a BMW i Wallbox Connect. You need to enable it in the BMW Connected app, via iDrive, or in the BMW ConnectedDrive Portal. Details can be found in the operating instructions of your BMW. The functionality ensures that the vehicle is automatically and dynamically charged using solar and/or tariff-optimised charging at the same time, in accordance with the individually set customer preference in the BMW Charging Portal.
Why do I have to enter a departure time?
A departure time is needed by the BMW Digital Charging Service to be able to optimally calculate the charging plan for the BMW i or BMW iPerformance vehicle and guarantee a fully charged vehicle at the departure time.
What do I have to consider as a BMW Digital Charging Service user if I want to charge my vehicle at public charging stations?
If you are using a BMW i Wallbox Connect at home and the charging mode "Intelligent charging" is selected, you don’t have to make any changes. If you are not using a BMW i Wallbox Connect and the charging mode "Off-peak charging" is selected, we recommend for charging at public charging stations that you to switch the charging mode to "Immediate charging". Please remember to switch the charging mode back at home.
What is the difference between charging mode and charging preference?
The charging mode is the charging setting of the vehicle (“Immediate”, “Off-peak charging” or “Intelligent”), the charging preference determines the kind of the optimisation (“Maximum use of self-generated energy” or “Cheapest option”) while charging with the BMW Digital Charging Service. In the charging mode "Immediate charging", the charging process begins immediately after the vehicle is plugged in. Even at a BMW Digital Charging Service location no optimisation takes place in this mode. "Off-peak charging" requires in general an entered electricity tariff in the BMW Charging Portal to let the system know when the electricity price is low and the entry of a departure time. "Intelligent charging" is only available in connection with the BMW i Wallbox Connect and also requires a set departure time. The charging preference “Maximum use of self-generated energy” or “Cheapest option” can be selected individually in the BMW Charging Portal and is only possible for the charging mode "Intelligent charging", in connection with the BMW i Wallbox Connect. If the option “Maximum use of self-generated energy” has been chosen as charging preference, charging takes place primarily with self-generated solar electricity. If the option “Cheapest option” has been chosen, charging primarily takes place during cheap electricity tariff times. If no photovoltaic system is installed, charging always takes place tariff-optimised/“Cheapest option” and no choice of the charging preference is displayed.
How many home charging locations can I create in my profile if I'd like to use the BMW Digital Charging Service at several locations with different electricity tariffs?
Basically, there is no limitation. However, the respective charging location must be located in the country in which the BMW ConnectedDrive contract was concluded.
Is the life span of the battery impacted by use of the BMW Digital Charging Service as charging processes are often begun and finished?
With the intelligent BMW battery management system which regulates, for example, the charging speed or the battery cooling, a battery life span of minimum 8 years is guaranteed by BMW.
How can I pre-condition and intelligently charge my vehicle for my desired departure time?
If preconditioning is chosen in the BMW Connected app together with departure time and 'Intelligent charging' mode the BMW Digital Charging Service will consider/include the vehicle preconditioning within the intelligent charging process. If 'Climate control' is being activated during the charging process, it will not be considered within the charging plan. In this case, the preconditioning could be powered from the battery even while the vehicle is plugged in.
Why is my vehicle charging immediately after plugging in, although the electricity price is expensive and/or no solar electricity is being generated at the moment?
In the case of a very low state of charge of the vehicle, a short charging phase may occur at the beginning in order to maintain the battery life span. Also, if the cabin preconditioning setting is activated, a 30-minute charging window in the charging plan is calculated shortly before the set departure time and independently of the electricity price or solar generation. This is so the cabin air conditioning/heating process can be performed correctly, and for this the energy is taken from the grid so that a maximum driving range can be maintained/guaranteed.
Why is a 2-hour charging window indicated before the departure time of my i3 when charging at home?
The i3 is equipped with an integrated heater for the high-voltage battery to prepare the vehicle perfectly for the next journey. At cold temperatures the heater warms the battery before departure to achieve the best possible driving range. This process can require max. 2 hours, therefore this time is principally blocked before the set departure time. The heating process will only be started at the preserved time if temperatures require it.
Which tariff times need to be set in the BMW Connected app charging timer so that the BMW Digital Charging Service becomes active?
If you use the BMW Digital Charging Service via the 'Off-peak tariff' charging mode, the charging timer needs to be changed once from the default setting (00:00 to 00:00) to any other time. If you use the BMW Digital Charging Service via the charging mode 'Intelligent charging', the setting of the charging timer is not relevant.
Why does my car charge with a higher kW performance than my solar power generation?
Current international standards for charging processes require a minimum charging capacity of approx. 1.4 kW with single-phase installations and approx. 4.1 kW with three-phase installations. In the case of a low solar generation, the solar-optimised charging process will be supported with grid energy to ensure these minimum levels but still making maximum use of the solar power available.
Is it possible to rapid charge with direct current (DC) in combination with the BMW Digital Charging Service?
Currently it is not possible to use DC (Rapid) charging in combination with the BMW Digital Charging Service. For intelligent charging, the vehicle must be charged with alternating current (AC) at a 'Charging location' defined in the BMW Charging Portal.
What is the difference between 'Solar optimised charging' with a BMW i Wallbox Connect, in combination with or without additional power meters?
With the BMW Digital Charging Service and a BMW i Wallbox Connect 'Solar optimised charging' is possible. The solar forecast is calculated on the basis of the sun course and the weather forecast data. This estimated solar share is considered for the charging process and the charging plan of the vehicle tracks the solar forecast as closely as possible within all set criteria*. The shown solar share is solely based on the solar forecast. With additional solar and/or house load power meters** installed in combination with a BMW i Wallbox Connect and used together with the BMW Digital Charging Service further chances are possible: The solar forecast is calculated on the basis of the sun course, the weather forecast data and the data of the solar power meter. A self-learning algorithm constantly improves the forecast quality and takes individual situations like e.g. shadow or clouding into account . The displayed solar share is based on the measured values of the solar power meter. *see also; "Why does my car charge with a higher performance than my solar power generation?", "According to which criteria will the charging plan be calculated?" and "Will my vehicle always be fully charged with the BMW Digital Charging Service?" **power meters availability tbc
Why is the solar forecast differing from the real energy output of the photovoltaic system?
In general the output of a solar system is dependant on many different factors and cannot be prognosed precisely. Important for a good forecast quality is that the solar system is configured as precise as possible in terms of roof pitch, cardinal direction and peak performance. With regard to forecast quality it has to be differentiated between 'Solar optimised charging' with a BMW i Wallbox Connect with or without additional power meters* (house load and solar power meter). In case a BMW i Wallbox Connect is used and additional power meters* are installed a self-learning algorithm constantly improves the forecast quality. (In the first weeks a less precise prognosis quality may occur). When 'Solar optimised charging' with a BMW i Wallbox Connect without the additional power meters*, the values of the additional power meters as basis for the self-learning algorithm are missing. Therefore individual situations like e.g. shadow or clouding cannot be taken into account for the solar forecast. *power meters availability tbc

Where can the GPS in my vehicle be activated?
Please consult the manual of your BMW on how to activate the data transfer of your vehicle GPS coordinates. If the transmission of the GPS coordinates e.g. after a service appointment has been disabled, this will be indicated accordingly in the BMW Charging Portal https://charging.bmwgroup.com/web/360electric-uk. Please consult the manual of your BMW on how to reactivate the data transfer.
Why doesn’t my vehicle display the mode "Intelligent charging"?
The charging mode 'Intelligent charging' is only dislpayed when the BMW Digital Charging Service is activated and your BMW i or BMW iPerformance vehicle is linked to the BMW Charging Portal https://charging.bmwgroup.com/web/360electric-uk. The charging mode 'Intelligent charging' is then available in the BMW Connected app as well as in the BMW ConnectedDrive Portal https://www.bmw-connecteddrive.uk for all respective models. Details can be found in the manual of your BMW.
I do not have a history for my charging process – what could be the reason?
If there is no entry in the charging history for a charging process, an incorrect setting, a connection error or a technical problem may be the reason. Maybe the mobile connection of the vehicle was interrupted. Please check the charging mode settings and whether error messages exist in the vehicle. If this occurs frequently, please contact our customer service. The following information will help us determine and solve the problem: Charging location and date/time of the charging process, utilised charge equipment, selected charging mode, has it worked previously, how often does the problem occur? If your vehicle hasn’t been charged, please contact your BMW Service Centre/Retailer.
My car was not charged or was not charged correctly – what could be the reason?
If your car wasn’t charged or wasn’t fully charged, an incorrect setting, a connection error or a technical problem may be the reason. If your car wasn’t fully charged, a too short plug-in time or not sufficiently available amount of energy (e.g. due to other electricity consumers in the household) can be the reason. Please also check your charging mode settings and whether your vehicle shows error messages. If this occurs frequently, please contact our customer service. The following information will help us determine and solve the problem: charging location and date/time of the charging process, utilised charge equipment, selected charging mode, has it worked previously, how often does the problem occur, was an entry created in the charging history? If there is a defect at the the vehicle, possibly displayed via notifications in the vehicle, please contact your BMW Service Centre/Retailer.
My car is not or was not charged intelligently – what could be the reason?
If your car isn’t or wasn’t charged intelligently (apparent e.g. in the charging history), the reason could be a wrong setting or a connection error. Please check the charging mode settings and whether your vehicle shows error messages. If your vehicle isn’t charged in an optimised manner, despite correct settings (FAQ for the charging mode), please check, whether the mobile phone connection of the vehicle has been disconnected. Furthermore, a disabled GPS transmission setting within the vehicle can be the reason for “Immediate charging” instead of an intelligent charging process.
No vehicle is displayed in the BMW Charging Portal – what could be the reason?
The BMW Digital Charging Service can only be completely set up and used, if your BMW i or BMW iPerformance vehicle is allocated to your BMW ConnectedDrive account. Further information on how to set up a BMW ConnectedDrive access account can be found under BMW ConnectedDrive: https://www.bmw-connecteddrive.co.uk
Why does the service not work in underground parking areas?
The use of the BMW Digital Charging Service requires your vehicle to be able to communicate with the BMW data centre via the integrated BMW ConnectedDrive module and a mobile phone connection. If there is no connection, e.g. due to structural conditions, the BMW Digital Charging Service cannot be used. If you are using a BMW i Wallbox Connect, an internet connection is required for using the BMW Digital Charging Service.
I cannot pair the BMW i Wallbox Connect with the BMW Digital Charging Service. What could be the reason?
The BMW i Wallbox Connect needs to be connected to the internet via the local network for the pairing to be successful. Details can be found in the documentation of the BMW i Wallbox Connect. Where applicable, please ensure that the security settings of the router or a firewall allow the communication of the BMW i Wallbox Connect with the internet.
When charging intelligently with the BMW i Wallbox Connect the indicator light at the charging port in the vehicle lights up in white, although the charging plan has not been completed yet – does this indicate an error?
No, if the charging plan reaches a scheduled charging break when charging intelligently with the BMW i Wallbox Connect, the colour display of the charging socket changes from blue to white. When the charging plan is continued, the display switches back again.
Why does the error message "GPS data are deactivated" show up in the BMW ConnectedDrive Portal?
The BMW Digital Charging Service needs GPS data usage to be activated in the vehicle, in order to identify a defined charging location. The confirmation can be set in iDrive via "settings" > "vehicle settings". To match the new setting with the system, a charging process can be initiated by plugging-in the vehicle. It can take some minutes until the new setting is applied.
